System Shakeup: Discover The NEW TESLAN® 1103 Primer + Topcoat

For the past few years, the Tesla NanoCoatings engineering team has been at work behind the scenes, quietly perfecting the next generation of protective offshore coatings. After countless hours of careful formulation and months of performance testing, these coatings are finally ready for their time in the sun.

This year we’re expanding the TESLAN® line with not one, but two new additions: the 1103 Primer, and the 4002 Topcoat. Designed as a complete system but compatible with existing TESLAN® products, these new additions represent a breakthrough in carbon nanotube technology for the protection and fabric maintenance of offshore structures.

What’s New With 1103 and 4002?

The benefits of this new system all come together to create the longest lasting offshore coating available today. While previous iterations of the TESLAN® two-step system have already proven to far outlast the competition in the Gulf of Mexico, this latest edition displays a coating life greater than its predecessor. Incredibly resistant to impacts, corrosion, and environmental wear, TESLAN® 1103 and 4002 are redefining the term ‘durability’. With enhanced color retention and a superior gloss finish, this system helps reflect more UV rays for longer coating life. Together, these two new products allow offshore asset owners to extend their operation’s total uptime and reduce fabric maintenance costs over that time.

How TESLAN Holds Up to The Competition

While we can talk this new system up in a million different ways, the proof is really in the pudding. To clearly demonstrate what sets TESLAN® apart from the competition, let us show before we tell:

In the video shown above, the latest TESLAN® products are presented alongside 4 of the most popular competing systems. These coatings were all applied to the manufacturer’s direction, then subjected to 18 full weeks of extreme aging testing in which they were exposed to UV, high temperatures, and corrosive saltwater which all mirror real offshore conditions. On week 19, the samples were closely examined and the results are clear: TESLAN® sustained significantly less damage and did a better job protecting the substrate underneath. For a more in-depth look at our testing methodology, be sure to read our article, The True Value of Durable High-Performance Offshore Coatings.

While the performance of this coating system is truly remarkable, it holds even more benefits in store for offshore owners and operators. All TESLAN® products are resistant to application defects like sagging, dripping, and cracking, and these new additions are no exception. So while many competing coatings are prone to defects which call for rework, whether that be in a matter of days or even half a year down the line, such maintenance can be eliminated altogether with our easy to use paint system. In fact, TESLAN® decimates the costs of offshore fabric maintenance by radically simplifying the application process, making a near-foolproof application possible in just a matter of hours rather than days. Developed with our patented 2×1 WET EDGE™ technology– which allows users to apply the topcoat directly onto the uncured primer– this system empowers owners and operators to realize immense labor savings in the forms of quick application and drastically reduced maintenance.

The Science Behind The System

So, how did we achieve these results? There are a few key players in this edition of the TESLAN® formula: carbon nanotubes, zinc, and a new (to us) type of resin.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and zinc are nothing new to the TESLAN® line. However, with this formula, we’ve further optimized the balance of CNTs and zinc to deliver the same cathodic protection with enhanced physical properties.

New to the TESLAN® line is the PC4000 resin, a critical ingredient in the TESLAN 4002 topcoat. This ‘hyperdurable’ resin is what gives TESLAN® 4000 its unmatched gloss, color retention, and UV resistance.

This PC4000 formulation outperforms acrylic urethane topcoats and drastically reduces many of the associated challenges like poor adhesion, low durability, and a prohibitively high material cost. In fact, the TESLAN® 4002 topcoat results in a significantly lower total cost of ownership overall compared to the industry standard topcoats of today.

When paired together, the TESLAN® 1103 primer and 4002 topcoat perform as a system which displays simply unbeatable performance. Resistance to impact, wear, and corrosion are all heightened, resulting in the greatest longevity we’ve accomplished to date.
